Swindon Hydro Baths
Saturday 10th September 2022 – 21:00pm – 02:30am
The Grade II listed Victorian health hydro was built in 1891 for the Great Western Railway as the GWR medical fund dispensary and swimming baths. Its aim was to provide those suffering from illness or injury with the best possible healthcare.
The building was also used as a hospital for returning soldiers in World War One.
Young girl, young soldier, footsteps, bangs, knocks, poltergeist activity, lights turning on and off, odd smells and disembodied voices.
The Hydro Baths in Swindon, Wiltshire opened in 1891. It’s an enormous complex: not just two swimming baths, there were washing and Turkish baths, a dispensary, all sorts of other medical facilities (mainly surgical) including dentistry and at one time even a hairdressing salon! It was one of the most modern facilities of its time, pre-dating integrated health centres.
The workers of the Great Western Railway paid for it by compulsory deductions from their wages, in return they were well looked-after.
During the First World War, the pool was used as a hospital for injured soldiers. During peacetime, in the winter months, the large pool was boarded over and all kinds of activities were held there, including dinner parties, concerts, exhibitions, roller skating and ballroom dancing – when it was known as ‘The Majestic’
There are have been several reports of ghost sightings over the years of a man and woman who like to make themselves known by moving objects around, walking the corridors and at one time a member of staff claimed that he heard a disembodied female voice asking him what he was doing?
In addition lights have been turned on and off as well as knocks, bangs and creaks that have been heard.
