What is Sea Glass?
Sea Glass is glass found on beaches along oceans, bays, rivers or large lakes that has been repeatedly tumbled and smoothed by crashing waves, water and sand. This creates the smooth, frosted shards of glass that we see today.
Seaham Sea Glass
Until 1921, Seaham was the location of the largest glass bottle works in Britain. Founded by John Candlish in1853, the Londonderry Bottleworks produced up to 20,000 hand-blown bottles a day, operating during the Victoria era, the Edward era era, World War I and the Intrawar period.
The bottle works tipped high volumes of glass waste in to the sea and almost a century after the botleworks closed, the sea continues to return this waste glass, now beautifully transformed in to sand-polished sea glass (known as Mermaid Tears in glass collecting circles!).
Seaham is also famed in beach-combing circles for its coveted ‘End of Day’ Sea Glass, which tends to be multicoloured and is highly prized by Sea Glass collectors across the world. ‘End of Day’ Sea Glass collected from Seaham Beach can be dated between 1853 and 1921.
