Hereford Shire Hall, Hereford

Hereford Shire Hall is one of our favourite local locations, and one that we believe to be truly haunted.
Past investigations at the hall have thrown up some rather interesting and frightening occurrences. During one investigation, a handful of guests and team all witnessed a thick, white ‘fog’, materialise in the dock inside the courtroom. On another occasion, we heard a stack of heavy chairs in the concert hall get pushed.
Will you choose to spend time alone in the holding cells? Or perhaps you feel brave enough to face the dark, foreboding basement?
Either way, we are certain that your night spent inside Hereford Shire Hall will be one that you will not forget about in a hurry.

Location History:

Built around 1820 on the site of the old Towns prison, Hereford Shire Hall is one of the oldest working court rooms in England.
The Shire Hall’s most famous trial was of a man called George Armstrong who was also known as ‘The Hay Murderer’ he killed his wife and was found guilty and was later taken to Gloucester prison to be hanged. Hanging’s used to take place in Hereford when the Shire Hall was a Prison. The public hangings took place where the War Memorial Monument now stands in the Square. Old tales say that a disturbed Prison Governor around this time used to keep the dead bodies for his own personal use , to feed to his pigs.
The Shire Hall also has many of its original features – some believed to date to the previous building! The cells still retain an original heavy gate (often heard moving on its own accord). The two courtrooms of the building have their original panelling and the original hook used by the judge to hang his cap on once the convict was sentenced to death.

Reported Paranormal Activity:

Our past events at Hereford Shire Hall have never left us disappointed. Loud bangs have been heard coming from the back of the concert hall whilst conducting a seance on the stage.
Guests and team members once witnessed an apparition inside the old courtroom, which vanished almost as quickly as it had appeared.
People have felt someone running at them whilst stood in the dark prison cells, and doors have been heard slamming shut with no one down there.
