Dudley castle is regarded as one of the most haunted locations in the Midlands and we will be investigating it this June!
Dating back to 1070, Dudley Castle certainly has a few ghostly tales to tell of – Perhaps the most famous haunting of the castle is that of ‘The Grey Lady’ who was recently captured on camera. Will you come face to face with her whilst we investigate?
Or perhaps you’ll be witness to some of the other strange occurrences that have been reported. Shuffling noises, whispering and dark hooded figures have all been experienced inside Dudley Castle and we can’t wait to see what it has in-store for us.
Dudley Castle is a ruined fortification in the town of Dudley, West Midlands, England. Originally a wooden motte and bailey castle built soon after the Norman Conquest, it was rebuilt as a stone fortification during the twelfth century but subsequently demolished on the orders of King Henry II. Rebuilding of the castle took place from the second half of the thirteenth century and culminated in the construction of a range of buildings within the fortifications by John Dudley. The fortifications were sleighted by order of Parliament during the English Civil War and the residential buildings destroyed by fire in 1750. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century the site was used for fêtes and pageants.
Today Dudley Zoo is located in its grounds. The location, Castle Hill, is an outcrop of Wenlock Group limestone that was extensively quarried during the Industrial Revolution, and which now along with Wren’s Nest Hill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument as the best surviving remains of the limestone industry in Dudley. It is also a Grade I listed building. The Dudley Tunnel runs beneath Castle Hill, but not the castle itself.
Reported Paranormal Activity:
There are reported to be countless spirits that haunt Dudley Castle, but Perhaps the most famous of all the ghosts here is that of the Grey Lady. The Grey Lady once lived in Dudley Castle and gave birth to her daughter there – Unfortunately, due to complications, her daughter died shortly after the birth and it’s said to be this traumatic experience that has led The Grey Lady to still roam the castle and it’s grounds. A photograph was recently taken at Dudley Castle by an unsuspecting visitor and it is purported to show the apparition of this famous spirit.
The most haunted location in the castle is thought to be the chapel undercroft. In an Ancient Room there is a stone coffin, that is believed to have once held the body of one of the most castle’s most feared Lords, John Somery.
Another popular ghost story of Dudley Castle is that of a Civil War drummer boy. He was killed by a single bullet from a 17th Century musket. Visitors to the castle have reported hearing him banging away on his drum in various drum rolls as if in battle.
