Creep Tunnels, Merseyside
Date:Saturday 21st April 2018
Creep Tunnels lay beneath the New Brighton Palace in Merseyside, and have a fascinating history dating back over three hundred years.
Before it’s life as a popular local nightclub, the area was once plagued by Pirates and Smugglers – It is said that a lot of the reported hauntings inside Creep Tunnels, are down to the restless souls of the Pirates and Smugglers, who are still searching for their lost loot and hoping to seek revenge.
Throw in numerous sightings of a ‘Grey Lady’ who is often seen roaming the dark corridors, grabbing at visitors clothes and Creep Tunnels really does seem to be the perfect ghost hunting location.
The original tunnels are said to have led to three locations; Mother Redcaps, Fort Perch Rock and the sandstone rocks called the Yellow & Red Noses. The tunnels location on the Wirral Peninsula, gave both Smugglers and Pirates the perfect opportunity to store their loot and commit their crimes whilst having quick access to the sea.
However, Creep Tunnels lay abandoned and lost for the years to follow, until they were re-discovered in 1932, along with a large store pit, by workers who were redeveloping the site.
Upon the discovery, the workers were greeted by a horrendous stench,is said to have been from the bodies hidden in the tunnels by smugglers, following the wreck of The Pelican in 1793.
The stench was that bad that large masses of disinfectant was needed to remove the smell so that development work could continue.
Not long after the outbreak of the Second World War, the tunnels became the location of an MOD Munitions Factory, which employed over 200 women working on the home front, to make the munitions.
The tunnels were also used as a base for local fire watchers as well as some areas being used as an air raid shelter for locals.
It was after the war that the tunnels were then used as various dance venues and nightclubs up until the 1990s.
